Here in the United States, BBC America is showing the Season 7 premiere of Dr. Who. Our 12 year old last week cycled through our town to send out invitations to classmates who are fellow Whovians. Tonight a small group of costumed boys are in our house, eating Dr. Who foods - including fish fingers with custard, bowtie pasta and a fabulous tardis cake.
In case you are unfamiliar, Dr. Who is a science fiction show featuring a time-traveling humanoid alien named The Doctor, who travels through space and time in a Tardis, (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) fighting various foes. Among his enemies are Daleks.
It is wonderful to watch boys approaching adolescence express such enthusiasm; one son's friend spent the morning in my kitchen, helping her son and mine make a magnificent Tardis cake surrounded by daleks. Isn't this amazing?!
Another boy arrived with a cake crafted into a bowtie and a third boy came bearing fish sticks and custard.
What is it about Dr. Who that has captured these boys' imaginations? My son told me earlier this week: "Except for the Daleks, mom, everything that happens on Dr. Who could happen in real life. It's based on science. It really, really could happen some time in the future."
