Bigger Picture Moment: A Grandson Shows How Suffering Can Evoke Beauty

Today our 12-year-old son tidied up garbage in Abuelita's garage, where their spaniel went snacking.

Today he stayed with Grandpapi so I could take Abuelita grocery shopping.

Today he came to Target with me to buy a new microwave and toiletries for his grandparents and to pick up Grandpapi's medications at the pharmacy.

Tomorrow morning, he will rearrange the book shelves in their family room because Abuelita wants them ordered from left to right, tallest to smallest.

It is hard to see loved ones age, but beautiful to see our son step up to the plate, cheerful and uncomplaining. It moves me to consider that while the struggles my aging father faces now are difficult to witness, these summer days also are an opportunity for all of us to make gestures of love that are a reminder of the One who loved us first.

We're seeing the Bigger Picture through simple moments -- moments that force us to stop and take notice of the ways our worlds are important, meaningful, and beautiful. Please join us at Jade's place todaylLnk up, and read a few others to encourage them as they find the fullness in the simple.

  2. I love when the different generations interact that way, and the youngest do what they can to care for their elders, who first paved the way for them. Lovely and thank you for sharing!

  3. This is one of life's great blessings. Watching your child offer care and support to your parent...it really does touch you in a deep, deep way. Tuck this memory away. It will bring you great comfort in the future. So lovely.
