The Kitchen Smells Like Autumn

Here in our New Jersey neighborhood today, the air was humid and the mosquitoes were busy biting. But here in my kitchen tonight, after the first full day of fall,  the air is filled with the scent of this new season: cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.

I buy pears for our 12-year-old son, but he likes to eat them before they ripen. He complained this morning that the pears on the kitchen table were too "mushy" and he said he wouldn't be eating them. So off to the internet I went - looking for a recipe for something to bake with ripe pears. Before I had settled on a recipe, a girlfriend gave me four eggs from her backyard chickens. Now I could bake a double batch of whatever.

Tonight, as my husband and I settled into the family room to watch college football, our 16 year old suggested I find a recipe with both apples and pears. So I did. I can't wait to eat the Harvest Spice Muffins now in the oven. We will eat a few, then freeze the rest for later in the week.

Here is the recipe I found on food.com. The picture below is what my muffins are supposed to look like when they are ready.
