My Seasonal Allergies, My NetiPot, and My Birthday Gratitude

Today's my birthday and my facebook wall has been filled with greetings from friends old and new about having a wonderful day. My sweet sister called. My parents, now into their eighties, called and were willing to listen to my detailed explanations about my various ailments.

You see, I have spent more than 24 hours in bed, with our puppy by my side. I've been laid low by fall allergies, despite my prescription allergy medications. (In recent weeks, I have also discovered I likely have had what is likely a lifelong allergy to dairy products. Perhaps this explains the severe hives and eczema of my childhood.)

And yet, I truly feel grateful today as I enter my second half-century on this planet. (I am 49 today, so entering my fiftieth year. ) I have been blessed beyond measure with a wonderful husband, two healthy, happy sons and work that I not only love, but which I am paid to do - teaching writing and reading skills to reluctant learners. It is astounding to realize Christ has been with me every step of the way as a loving Presence.

While I am sending up thanks - thanks be also to my NetiPot. I don't know how I would have made it through the past 24 hours without you! (No, I am not on commission; just a grateful consumer)

  1. Happy Birthday, Allison. As a 51-year-old, I can honestly say the second half-century is WONDERFUL. Sorry you are not feeling well. I've been battling a cold since Friday. I don't think it's allergies as I bragged last week my 13 years of allergy shots keeps me allergy free (I think). But it is harvest time here and I wonder. I had a severe dairy allergy when I was young (only part of the reason for the shots). I hope you are up and better soon!

  2. Happy Birthday, Allison! I'm not sure about the neti pot...it sounds kind of gross, but then again, I use saline in my nose like it's going out of style. I have allergies and asthma too. May God continue to bless you in the years to come!

  3. @Sandy C: Wow. So much in common, even the allergies!
@Sarah: Once you get over the grossness factor, it is a HUGE help. It totally clears out your nose. Allergies lead to sinus congestion which lead to asthma. Bless you too!

  4. Happy Birthday! I'm sorry you don't feel well though, that is not good. In any event, the Neti pot is a life saver and I have had mine since 1995!

  6. Hope you are feeling better soon. Don't think I could do the neti pot thing. I can't even deal with nasal sprays. And happy birthday! My age rounds to 50 now, so i'm not far behind you. And it's surely not as old as it used to be!
