Happy Birthday Honey!

This is the last day our son will be 11.  Lucas spent the night curled in bed next to me, along with the puppy. Today he is home sick, and I was able to take a "family sick" day to take care of him. We two have spent most of the day sleeping; this fall virus caught us both.

He was born after 20 minutes of hard labor, emerging bloodied and purple and red at 9 pounds, 13 ounces after a speedy trip down the birth canal. It feels as if he couldn't wait to be born and he has been running every since.

He is so funny, so charming, so sweet. He also loves to find out where the limits are - whether that means sitting on the roof of our house at age two or staying up as late as he can during a birthday sleepover.

For his birthday party tomorrow, he has invited more than a handful of boys over. Our job is to buy lots of pizza and make pancakes with ice cream in the morning. He tells me he and his friends will  walk a few blocks to the local convenience store and load up on candy and soda. Then, he tells me, they will set up tents in our backyard and could you and Dad please stay away. They plan to talk until past midnight he says.

This boy fills us with love and laughter. He's happy everywhere he goes, and always has been. He teaches us patience and faith and optimism.

A few years ago, Lucas picked a nickname for himself: Lucky. "I am a lucky boy mom," he told me then. The name has stuck through three schools, several sports teams, two parishes and years of tree climbing, bare feet and bubble baths.

Happy Birthday, dear Lucky, Happy Birthday to You!

  8. @Julie: Thank you! They are making the big trek to the convenience store for the candy and soda! The tent is set up and the tarp and the sleeping bags. They wanted to start a fire in the grill. That would be a no, kiddo.
